The development of advanced technologies and new materials go hand-in-hand. SK Innovation has been developing a range of new
materials in energy areas and information and electronics areas based on its expertise in polymers and petrochemicals. We have
successfully developed and brought to market world-class new materials such as lithium ion battery separators, flexible copper clad
laminates, and optical film thus contributing to local production of core components and establishing the technological foundation for
the company. With our commitment to new materials, we are prepared to open a new horizon in the advanced materials sector.
Major R&D Project
- Lithium-ion Battery Separator (LiBS)
A lithium-ion battery separator (LiBS) is a key component used in lithium-ion batteries and a
functional polyolefin film that prevents physical contact between electrodes to maintain
stability and allows lithium-ions to pass freely during battery charging and discharging.
SK Innovation became only the world’s third company to successfully develop and
commercialize proprietary technology for LiBS, and we are now producing top-quality
products. We remain committed to helping Korea sharpen its competitive edge in the battery market and develop rechargeable batteries, a next-generation growth driver, by providing
superior products and technologies tailored to customers’ needs.
- Flexible Copper Clad Laminate (FCCL)
As mobile phones, digital cameras, laptops, and other portable electronic devices grow
slimmer and lighter, the focus is now placed on thin, highly integrated and highly flexural
circuit boards. Demand is also increasing for new materials that can replace existing circuit
SK Innovation has developed flexible copper clad laminate, or FCCL, a core component of the
flexible printed circuit boards used in many consumer electronic devices.
We have developed and built a mass production facility using our proprietary continuous curing technology, and provided products with world-leading dimensional stability and bending
resistance, supporting an array of designs for electronic devices.
- Optical Film (TAC: Tri-Acetyl Cellulose Film)
Alongside the improved quality and expanding uses of flat panel displays such as LCDs, there
has been a corresponding rise in demand for high-performance optical films.
Using our proprietary technologies, SK Innovation developed a high-performance TAC
(Tri-Acetyl Cellulose) film, an area in which Japanese manufacturers were until recently the
sole providers. We now aim to pioneer the TAC film market and contribute to sharpening the
competitive edge of the local display industry.
TAC film is used in retardation compensation, anti-reflection, and surface protection, as well as in the protection of polarizers.
