growth. SK Innovation is ushering in a green energy era by developing innovative future energy technologies such as clean coal,
next-generation thin film solar cells, non-crop biofuel and hydrogen energy.
Major R&D Project
- 1. Clean Coal Energy
The earth’s coal reserves are three times larger than those of petroleum, and coal is more evenly distributed around the world. To create more energy using this promising resource, many gasification technologies have been developed. Since these technologies generate
more CO2 emissions and require larger initial investments, however, adoption remains slow.
SK Innovation is developing new-concept clean coal gasification technology that can reduce CO2 emissions significantly, a major
obstacle to wider adoption of coal, as well as help lower initial investments. We are also focusing on technology to utilize low-grade
coal, whose adopted has been limited due to a lack of right technology, despite merits such as large reserves and low prices. Through
these efforts for clean coal energy technology, we believe we can make significant contributions to global energy security.
Based on our clean coal energy technology, we will lay the foundation for leadership in the future-energy market, where competition for green energy technologies is heating up.
- 2. Biofuels
Biofuels such as biodiesel and bioalcohol are currently the most readily available petroleum substitutes. Biofuels are likely to only be
used on a limited scale, since they can bring about a rise in crop prices and deforestation. SK Innovation is developing the technology to produce next-generation biofuels like biobutanol, a highly effective fuel expected to address many energy challenges.
Using our unique catalyst technology, we are developing new biobutanol manufacturing technology which helps conserve energy and
increase yield ratio. We are also working on innovative technologies that use inedible crops and marine plants as energy sources.
- 3. Hydrogen Energy
SK Innovation is committed to developing hydrogen energy technologies to power the world of tomorrow. The company has Korea’s unique technology for compact hydrogen manufacturing devices and will continue to be a national leader in the field. In 2007, it built a hydrogen station using a proprietary hydrogen-manufacturing device. The company’s latest project is building a hydrogen station using landfill gas at Seoul’s World Cup Park.
In addition to these innovative technologies, SK Innovation is developing solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) as a next-generation power generation system.
