Based on its proprietary technologies in the polymer area, SK Innovation develops high-performance and environment-friendly products. Among our world-class technologies are the world’s first CO2 plastic technology for commercial use, high-performance polyolefin
manufacturing technology, and PE-RT products. By developing innovative, customer-oriented products and manufacturing process
technologies, we are pioneering the global polymer technology sector.
Major R&D Project
- 1. GreenPol™
GreenPol™ is an eco-friendly plastic that uses carbon dioxide as its main ingredient. With
carbon dioxide accounting for more than 40 percent of GreenPol™’s ingredients, the plastic is
considered a promising carbon conversion & utilization (CCU) material of the future.
With its superior transparency and barrier properties, GreenPol™ is expected to be utilized in
film and food packaging materials, and its biodegradability attests to its eco-friendly status.
In addition, SK Innovation has achieved a world first in creating a continuous production process for the plastic based on accumulated
process technologies. The GreenPol™ catalyst has a relatively high reaction relative to other catalysts, making it the closest technology of its kind to the commercialization stage.
- 2. Nexlene™
SK Innovation has developed a proprietary polyolefin manufacturing technology called
Nexlene™, a high-performance polyolefin product, made with single-site catalyst. Nexlene™ is a high-performance polyethylene with outstanding physical and processing properties,
accompanied by world-leading quality, a wide product spectrum, high catalyst activity, and
Nexlene™ is expected to be widely adopted across various sectors for its high shock-resistant,
processing, thermal sealing, and hygiene qualities.
- 3. EPDM Rubber (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer Rubber)
EPDM rubber is a three-component copolymer in which ethylene, propylene, and diene are converted into rubber form. Unlike natural
rubber, which oxidizes easily in poor conditions, EPDM rubber is not easily oxidized thanks to its stable molecular structure. It can be
widely used for interior/exterior components of vehicles, tires/tubes requiring high durability, construction materials and cable, and a
variety of machine parts.
SK Innovation recently developed S5890F, whose fine molecular structure adjustment technology improves physical and
processing qualities; and S6090F, which improves performance and cost savings and ensures high filling. In addition, we are now working on a new product using a metallocene catalyst, which delivers enhanced performance compared with the existing Ziegler-Natta
- 4. On-demand Products
To take and maintain the lead in the high-molecule product markets, SK Innovation is developing premium polyethylene products as
well as differentiated PE/PP items and processes. Examples include insulation materials that are recyclable and used in long-term
storage; the new eco-friendly material PE-RT for hot water and heating pipes; and HCPP, or high-crystallinity impact polypropylene.
In addition, the company is providing technical support to meet the differing needs of customers.
