- Selected as partner in technology evaluation program led by battery consortium USABC, and will conduct evaluation on batteries used for electric vehicles jointly with USABC for one year
- Seeks way to lead a joint project with big three U.S. automakers depending on evaluation results and win global recognition for quality and technology, adds momentum to its battery business

“SK Energy is laying the foundation for expansion into the electric vehicle battery market in the U.S”

SK Energy (President Koo Ja-Young, www.skenergy.com) said on September 9 that it would participate in a technology evaluation program led by the U.S. Advanced Battery Consortium, (USABC).

Jointly established by the three largest automakers in the U.S. -- GM, Ford and Chrysler, the consortium is committed to developing high-performance batteries designed to be installed in electric and hybrid electric vehicles (EV and HEVs)

Working closely with the USABC, SK Energy will evaluate its lithium-ion batteries designed to be equipped in electric vehicles for the next one year. The consortium will pay for 50 percent of the evaluation costs.

Depending on the results of evaluation, SK Energy will be better positioned to win a large-volume project order from the U.S. big three.

“The fact that we have been named to participate in the technology evaluation program of the USABC, a high-profile consortium led by the three largest U.S. automakers, indicates that our technology is recognized by an authorized U.S. agency,” said an official at the company. “This partnership will lay the foundation for the company’s expansion into the U.S. electric vehicle battery market.”

SK Energy was named by Mitsubishi Fuso, a subsidiary of Daimler Group, in October last year to supply batteries for hybrid vehicles. It was also named a battery supplier for an electric vehicle project joined by Hyundai Motor, winning wide recognition for its quality and advanced technology across a range of automobile manufacturers.

CT&T, a South Korea-based neighborhood electric vehicle (NEV) manufacturer, selected SK Energy as a supplier of their lithium ion batteries for “NEV e-zone,” an electric vehicle presently under development, joining a number of hybrid, electric and neighborhood electric vehicle companies which have chosen SK Energy as their partner.

SK Energy continues to take a leap forward as a technology-based total energy provider, leading development of an array of future energy sources including Green Coal, GreenPol (CO2 plastic), biofuel, hydrogen energy and smart grids.
